Concord
Concord got its name from the lively discussion its founders had when deciding where to place the county seat. When they reached a compromise, they named the town Concord, meaning “harmony,” to reflect the peaceful spirit in which the issue was settled.
Today, Concord is recognized for its concentration of motorsports attractions, which include Charlotte Motor Speedway, the Hendrick Motorsports Museum and various NASCAR driver headquarters. Concord also is home to the state’s most popular tourist attraction – the 1.4 million-square foot Concord Mills outlet shopping mall.
Located within a two-block radius, Historic Downtown Concord offers theaters, art galleries, library, specialty retailers, pottery studio, botanical garden and a pedestrian greenway system.
One of the fastest growing counties in the region, Cabarrus County also is an emerging leader in the biotechnology and food sciences industries with the North Carolina Research Campus, a public-private venture supporting a community of 300 scientists and support staff focused on research.
In 2000, Concord’s city council implemented the “Partnerships for Stronger Neighborhoods” program. This program is designed to enhance the lives of residents in the neighborhoods in the city, increasing the quality of both life and events for those calling Concord home. As part of the program, some city staff members have volunteered to be appointed as liaisons to work directly with neighborhoods that participate in the program. There are currently 45 neighborhoods participating in the program, which contributes to making Concord one of the most sought-after communities for homebuyers in the regional real estate market.
Concord provides its neighborhoods with three recreational centers, eight parks, four sport complexes and an aquatics center. Lake Fisher affords residents boating, fishing, greenways and bike paths. Residents can enjoy the championship 18-hole Rocky River Golf Club and Cabarrus YMCA.
When you look at Concord today you see a wonderful mixture of progress and heritage, and the perfect blend of business, industry, and residential life, you can see that Concord still embodies the meaning of its name – “harmony.”
